Shinjuku Boys

English (subtitled), 53 min, 1995, UK

'Shinjuku Boys' takes us into the world of ‘Onnabes’ – a Japanese term for women who choose to live as men and date women. The film centres on three onnabes working in the New Marilyn Club as hosts, entertaining heterosexual women who have grown frustrated by relationships with ‘real’ men. Although all three share the same profession they maintain very different relationships, revealing a variety of approaches to their sexuality. With remarkably honest and frank interviews from all the onnabes, 'Shinjuku Boys' reveals what it is like to live as an outsider in mainstream society.
