Present Times

Samakal
English, 52 min, 1999, India

The film delves into the crisis in West Bengal's much celebrated land reform and distribution programme and women's struggle for their right to land in the face of rampant dowry practice and escalating violence against them in the present times.

It documents the demand for equal rights to land and productive resources of the state by the peasant women of West Bengal, India. It gets into probing, interactive research with women in rural areas who redefine the necessity of equal rights in the present climate of social change, crisis and sweeping globalisation.
