Gora: A television series

Rabindranath Tagore’s second novel ‘Gora’ – arguably one of his best - has been commissioned by Doordarshan to Magic Lantern Movies for a 26 episode television series in Hindi. GORA was written over two years 1907 to 1909 and Tagore set it in the decade of the 1880s after the brutal reprisal by the British of the 1857 Uprising. Opposed to nationalism and fundamentalism of every kind, Tagore provides in ‘Gora’ a fascinating account of that time as well as the search for true liberation and universalism.

Directed by Somnath Sen, the series tells the story of Gourmohan - Gora to his friends - who is a staunch orthodox Hindu - believing that change in 'his' Hindu society can only come once Indians throw off the yoke of British rule. In this quest, Gora gives up everything: friendship, relationships, and love to single-mindedly pursue his idea of the ideal society.

Many questions raised by Tagore in this novel are relevant even today, a hundred years later: questions such as what and who comprise a nation and the role of lower castes, the dispossessed and women in nation building. He also examines the contemporaneous disconnect between urban educated and rural peasants. While the educated classes keep discussing issues of societal ills and ways to eradicate them, the peasants are engaged in a fight for daily survival, the economic divide increasing despite progress.

The series was telecast twice on Doordarshan National.
